On a hot afternoon in late-1890s Sacramento, a baseball game nearly stopped because the crowd had moved too close to the field. Spectators leaned over railings, shouted from foul territory, and edged onto the grass itself. Arguments over calls were made from a few feet away. Hats flew. Tempers flared. When an umpire missed a decision, the noise didn’t stop at the stands—it followed him home. More than once, officials needed police protection just to get there safely.

This was not unusual. When the Gilt Edges began dominating California baseball, the line between spectator and participant blurred.
